GeoComply records 100 million online betting transactions for Super Bowl LVII

GeoComply has revealed it conducted a record 100 million geolocation checks for online sports betting during Super Bowl LVII weekend.

The game took place yesterday (12 February), with the Kansas City Chiefs fighting back to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 and become NFL champions for the second time in four years.

This year also marked the first time the Super Bowl took place in a state with legal online sports betting, with the Chiefs and Eagles having faced off at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

KeyStar officially acquired ZenSports in October 2022, along with esports tournament specialist Ultimate Gamer.

ZenSports consists of both a traditional sportsbook and a peer-to-peer sports betting marketplace.

SIS pens deal to offer Italian racing content

Betting services supplier Sports Information Services (SIS) has announced that it has reached an agreement to add Italian horse racing content to its offering.

The agreement was reached in partnership with Italian betting and broadcasting supplier Media System Technologies (MST).

“The addition of high-class Italian content further emphasises our focus to bring operators and their customers the widest range of betting opportunities from around the world 24/7, 365 days a year,” said head of international horse racing at SIS Conall McSorley.

McSorley praised the state of Italian racing, arguing that it was on an “upward trajectory”, and that he was certain that the content addition would prove successful with both bettors and operators.

SIS will now feature content from the IRw consortium of tracks – which includes Merano, Pisa, Rome, Treviso and Varese – as well as the Agnano racetrack.

888 approved for Hannahville tribe online casino partnership in Michigan

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has approved 888’s VHL Michigan subsidiary as the new platform provider for the Hannahville Indian Community’s internet casino website.

Under the arrangement, VHL Michigan will support the tribe, which operates the Island Resort and Casino, with its igaming site that runs under the Sports Illustrated brand.

The deal came about after Churchill Downs Incorporated’s TwinSpires B2B sports betting business, the original platform provider for both online casino gaming and internet sports betting to the Hannahville tribe, withdrew from the agreement last July.

Betfred secures online sports betting licence in Maryland

Betfred has become the eighth operator to secure a licence to offer online sports betting in Maryland, while the group also opened a new retail sportsbook in Nevada.

Issued by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission, the licence will enable Betfred to roll out its Betfred Sportsbook mobile wagering app in the state.

Maryland opened its regulated online betting market in November last year, with Barstool, BetRivers, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet among the other operators licensed in the state.

New York smashes sports betting revenue and handle records in January

Players in New York spent a record amount betting on sports online in New York in January, while the state also set a new monthly revenue record.

Handle for the month amounted to $1.79bn, surpassing the previous record of $1.67bn set in the same month last year, although the January 2022 figure only included part of the month as legal sports betting did not launch in the state until 8 January.

The January 2023 figure was also 10.2% higher than the $1.62bn recorded in the final month of 2022.

Playtech enters US retail sports betting market through Gold Rush Gaming partnership

Playtech has announced a new retail sports betting partnership with Gold Rush Gaming, which will allow Playtech to officially enter the US retail sports betting market.

As part of the deal, Playtech will supply its sports betting kiosk software and management systems to Gold Rush, which will be distributed across Ohio.

The rollout will initially cover 50 locations, and will be activated ahead of Super Bowl LVII on 12 February.

Sisal obtains Morocco’s sports betting concession

Flutter Entertainment-owned Sisal has been awarded Morocco’s sports betting concession licence for an eight-year term.

The Italy-facing online operator, which launched Morocco’s lotteries licence in 2019, obtained the betting concession from La Marocaine des Jeux et des Sports (MDJS). The deal, which sees Sisal replace Intralot from January 2024, also includes the possibility of a two-year extension.

The offering, which includes fixed-odds and mutual betting, will be exclusively distributed by Sisal Jeux Maroc through a network of retail outlets and online. Sisal Jeux Maroc is a joint venture between Sisal and Paddy Power, another Flutter division.

The award comes a year after the beginning of the tender process, and six months after Sisal was acquired by Flutter in a €1.91bn deal.

DC sports betting revenue and handle down in December

Sports betting revenue and handle in Washington DC both declined month-on-month during December, although revenue increased year-on-year.

Player spending for the month amounted to $18.7m, which was 12.6% lower than $21.4m in November and also 3.1% behind the $19.3m wagered in December 2021.

In terms of gross gaming revenue, this reached $2.4m in December, a 7.7% drop from $2.6m in November, but 71.4% up from $1.4m in December of the previous year.

In a market as crowded as sports betting, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies like computer vision must continually reinvent themselves in order to remain relevant.

Arguably, it has a well-founded basis in this space, having begun as a completely different project close to 10 years ago.

“Before this role, I was head of innovation at Sportradar, and that’s how we started this computer vision journey as well – it was an innovation project that actually grew,” says Pataky.

AGA expects Americans to wager record $16.0bn on Super Bowl LVII

A record 50.4 million Americans are expected to wager an estimated $16.0bn on Super Bowl LVII this weekend, according to forecasts from the American Gaming Association (AGA).

Based on a national sample of 2,199 adults, the AGA said 20% of American adults will place at least one bet on the game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs this weekend.

This would be a 61% increase on the record set in 2022, while the AGA also said the amount wagered by players is expected to more than double year-on-year.
