Rhode Island sets new sports betting handle record in January

Players in Rhode Island wagered a record $62.3m on sports in January, although revenue in the US state remained level year-on-year.

Consumer spending was 6.3% ahead of $58.6m in January of last year and 5.2% more than in December 2022, while the total surpassed the existing monthly record of $61.2m set in November 2022 by 1.8%.

Online betting accounted for $37.5m of all wagers placed during January, while retail spend was $24.8m, split $17.2m at Twin River and $7.7m the Tiverton Casino.

TAB NZ hits profit target for the first time in FY22/23

TAB NZ recorded above budget profits for the first time in months thanks to strong returns from sports betting and domestic racing.

For the month to 31 January 2023, the gaming operator reported a profit of NZ$14.6m (US$9.1m/€8.6m/£7.6m), which was $0.3m above budget. In the sixth monthly trading update for the 2022-23 financial year, this was the first time the operator has posted a profit above budget.

Turnover of $230.1m was 0.9% above budget, in part thanks to a strong racing and sports calendar.

Following on from December, overall field sizes across all three racing codes in January were again either up on, or on par with, the year-to-date average. The peak meeting turnover of $6.6m was on 21 January for the Karaka Million at Pukekohe.

Ballers Sportsbook partners Sportradar to launch sports betting in Puerto Rico

Newly established Puerto Rican sports betting operator Ballers Sportsbook has announced plans to go live in the unimported US territory through a new partnership with Sportradar.

Under the multi-year agreement, Sportradar will supply Ballers with its Orako sportsbook solution, with Ballers planning to fully integrate this with R Franco Digital Player Account Management technology to allow for omnichannel betting.

Ballers customers will have access to Sportradar’s betting portfolio, enabling them place a range of bets such as parlays, in-game wagering, teasers, futures and player props across their favourite sports.

Better Collective signs media partnership with Goal

Denmark-based affiliate Better Collective has announced a global media partnership with Goal, the online football brand, to create sports betting content.

The deal will see Better Collective running the sports betting section of Goal across all the brand’s domains, which is featured in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Better Collective will also provide Goal with sports betting content, as well as technology and data insights.

Jesper Søgaard, Better Collective CEO and co-founder, said that the deal is the start of bigger things to come from the affiliate.

“Partnering with such a well-recognised and renowned media like Goal perfectly aligns with our media partnership strategy and our overall strategy of becoming the leading digital sports media group,” said Søgaard. “There is no doubt in my mind that we will be able to benefit from each other’s expertise.”

Goal is owned by FootballCo, which operates other sports brands including Mundial, Spox and Voetbalzone.

Nevada gambling revenue rises 18% year-on-year in January

The Nevada Gaming Control board reported an 18.0% year-on-year rise in gambling revenue in the US state during January, with growth across all key markets.

Revenue for the month amounted to $1.27bn, up from $1.08bn in January 2022 but 3.1% lower than $1.31bn in December of last year.

Slots accounted for $874.5m of all revenue for the month, 15.9% up on the same month last year. Multi-denomination slots generated $459.1m in revenue, with penny slots revenue at $285.9m.

DC sports betting market continues to decline in January

Sports betting handle and revenue in Washington DC fell month-on-month again in January, while the market also experienced a year-on-year decline.

Player spending in January amounted to $18.5m, down 0.5% from $18.6m last year and also 1.1% lower than $18.7m in December 2022.

Gross gaming revenue for the month reached $1.5m, a 25.0% drop from $2.0m in January of 2022 and 37.5% behind $2.4m in December.

New Hampshire smashes sports betting revenue record in January

Sports wagering revenue reached an all-time high in New Hampshire in January, while player spending fell just short of the state’s monthly record.

Gross gaming revenue for January amounted to $12.3m, a year-on-year rise of 53.8% from January 2022 and also 47.7% higher than in December of last year.

The January figure surpassed the existing monthly record of $9.1m that was set in October 2022.

New era for football as white paper recommends new regulator

The establishment of a new football regulator could have wide-reaching implication for the industry's relationship with the sport, according to a new white paper.

Details on the new independent regulator were released as part of a football industry white paper, which was brought about by a call for reform in the form of a fan-led review of football governance.

The review brought up a number of key issues concerning the sport, including the controversial European Super League – a proposed competition that was criticised for being elitist and exclusionary of certain clubs.

While the football white paper does not specifically mention how the place of the gambling industry will be addressed going forward, it focuses greatly on financial sustainability for clubs and efforts to “reduce harm”.

Massachusetts overturns affiliate ban in regulation

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has announced that it will overturn the ban on affiliates that was created in the state’s regulation.

In its open meeting today (23 February), the MCG agreed to replace the existing language in its regulation, which currently bans affiliates from the market by prohibiting cost per acquisition (CPA) and revenue share agreements.

The MGC went on to confirm that they have been working on amendments to the regulations of both licensing for sports wagering vendors as well as advertising for sports wagering advertising.

These amendments are currently still a period of consultation and will be voted on during an open meeting on 23 March 2023.

ATG CEO: FY22 results success despite “turbulent and troubled year”

Former Swedish trotting monopoly Aktiebolaget Trav och Galopp (ATG) has reported full-year 2022 revenue of SEK6.04bn (£480.9m/€546.5m), a slight decrease of 1.2% compared to 2021, despite a “turbulent and troubled” 2022.

The total revenue consists of net gaming revenue at SEK5.22bn, agency income of SEK234m and other incomes at SEK584bn.

Hasse Lord Skarplöth, CEO of ATG, said that the operator had delivered good results for the period – particularly in terms of sport and casino – regardless of outside challenges.

“I ended last year’s CEO speech by saying ‘we can look forward to an exciting 2022’,” said Skarplöth. “So, a year later, I can state that I got a little more right than I wanted – but in the wrong way.

“ATG, during such a turbulent and troubled year, succeeding in increasing the net gaming revenue in both sports and casino by 8% and 49%, respectively, is a well-approved result.”

Federal Bill to ban sports betting ads introduced in the US

A bill introduced into the House by Democratic representative, Paul Tonko proposes a wide-reaching ban on sportsbook advertising.

Entitled The Betting on Our Future Act, the bill aims to “prohibit the advertising of sportsbooks on any medium of electronic communication subject to the jurisdiction of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and for other purposes”.

If passed, sportsbooks would not be permitted to advertise on mediums that fall under the control of the FCC, such as TV, radio or the internet.

The act is modelled after the Federal Cigarette Labelling and Advertising Act, that passed in 1965 and banned tobacco advertisements in the US.

Louisiana online betting handle reaches record $245.2m in January

Consumers in Louisiana wagered a record $245.2m on sports in January, although revenue in the market declined month-on-month.

The total spent by players was 505.4% up from $40.5m in January 2022, although the state’s legal online betting market only opened towards the end of that month.

The monthly handle was also 12.1% higher than in December 2022 and 4.9% ahead of the previous record of $233.7m set in November.
