Kambi pens multi-channel sportsbook deal with Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort

Kambi Group has entered into a multi-channel sportsbook agreement with Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort in the US state of Arkansas.

Under the deal, Kambi will provide its on-property and online sportsbook solutions direct to the thoroughbred racetrack and casino.

Kambi will support Oaklawn with the launch of its online sportsbook operations under the brand “Oaklawn Sports”, subject to Arkansas passing the relevant laws. Online gambling of any kind is not yet legal in the state.

In addition, Kambi will continue to provide its retail sports betting solution to Oaklawn. The venue has been offering sports wagering through Kambi’s retail sportsbook since last year, with the new, multi-channel deal replacing the existing agreement.

“Oaklawn has been one of the most trusted brands in Arkansas for more than 100 years and we are excited to now offer our loyal customers yet another great amenity with our much-anticipated mobile wagering platform,” Oaklawn general manager Wayne Smith said.

New Hampshire sports betting handle falls to 11-month low in July

Consumers in New Hampshire wagered $42.7m (£36.3m/€43.0m) on sports in July, the lowest monthly figure since August of last year.

July’s handle was 16.4% higher than $36.7m in July 2021 but 20.3% behind the $53.6m bet by players in June this year, according to figures published by the New Hampshire Lottery.

Of this total, $33.1m was wagered online with DraftKings, while the remaining $9.5m was spent at retail sportsbooks across the US state. DraftKings secured exclusive rights to offer sports betting online via the New Hampshire Lottery in November 2019.

In terms of revenue, gross gaming revenue from sports betting in July amounted to $4.5m, which was 45.2% ahead of $3.1m in the same month last year and only 6.3% lower than $4.8m in June 2021, despite the difference in handle.

Some $3.7m of gross gaming revenue was generated online, while $768,211 came from retail sports betting facilities.

SuperBook to launch retail sportsbook at Orioles stadium

Sports betting operator SuperBook Sports has announced a new partnership with MLB team the Baltimore Orioles that will involve the building of a retail sportsbook sports lounge at the club’s Oriole Park at Camden Yards ballpark.

SuperBook does not currently have a Maryland sports wagering licence and the deal will be the operator’s first foray into the state’s regulated sports betting market. As such, the partnership will be subject to the relevant approvals from the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC).

Active in Nevada since 1986, SuperBook’s online brand has expanded as sports betting has grown to other states. In June, the operator expanded into Tennessee through a platform partnership with International Game Technology (IGT).

Dazn Bet goes live with UK “soft launch”

Dazn Bet – a new betting venture from streaming giant DAZN – has launched its beta product in the UK, the first market in which it is live.

The streaming business announced the launch of a new betting brand in April, which would be powered by technology from Pragmatic Play and named Dazn Bet.

Later that month, Dazn announced that Mark Kemp, who at the time was chief executive of BoyleSports, would lead the new betting brand.

The operator will do business under a Great Britain Gambling Commission licence held by One Click Limited. One Click had operated a number of B2C brands in Great Britain such as Casinoland and Royal Slots, before withdrawing from the market earlier this year.

Kemp said the the ultimate goal of Dazn Bet was to create a product that fully integrates betting into streaming. The business said it hoped to also integrate news updates, non-fungible tokens, tickets, and merchandise – as well as betting – into its streaming product in the near future.

Bryan Bennett fought “800lb gorillas” working for a challenger brand in the social casino space, and that experience could prove crucial as he works to make Betfred USA Sports a key player in the sports betting sector.

WynnBet and MaximBet among latest sports betting licence applicants in Ohio

A further four operators have submitted applications for mobile management services licences in Ohio, with WynnBet and Maximbet among the brands seeking approval in the state.

As confirmed by the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC), the two operators, along with Digital Gaming Corporation – which has the rights to the Betway brand in the US – and Stake Trade, more commonly known as Prophet Exchange, have put their names forward for a license

Mississippi sports betting handle continues to decline in July

Player spending on sports betting in Mississippi declined for the fourth consecutive month in July, while the state’s handle also fell year-on-year.

Consumers wagered a total of $18.3m (£15.4m/€18.2m) in sports during the month, down 27.1% from $25.1m in June this year and also 40.4% lower than $30.7m in July of 2021.

Revenue improved month-on-month, rising 19.5% from $2.1m in June to $2.5m, though this figure was 13.8% behind the $2.9m reported in July last year.

Coastal casinos were once again the busiest of the state’s sports betting venues drawing a total of $11.4m in bets and turning $1.5m in revenue.

Player spending at central casinos reached $4.1m and revenue amounted to $481,362, while northern casinos took $2.8m in wagers and posted $513,693 in revenue for the month.

Baseball drew the largest portion of bets during July, with consumers wagering $6.5m at coastal casinos, $1.9m at central casinos and $1.6m at northern casinos.

Kansas to launch legal sports betting on 1 September

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has announced that licensed operators in the US state can begin to accept wagers on 1 September.

The four state-owned land-based casinos – Boot Hill Casino & Resort, Kansas Star Casino, Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway, and Kansas Crossing Casino & Hotel – will be able to accept bets in-person and on mobile platforms.

Tribal casinos are also working to align on compacts with the state for sports wagering, with these casinos to be authorised to launch as soon as agreements are reached.

“Legalising sports betting is a common-sense solution that keeps Kansans’ money in Kansas and drives business to sporting events, casinos, restaurants, and other entertainment venues,” Kelly said. “I want to thank all our partners for working with us to get this done in time for football season.”

Penn exercises options to acquire remainder of Barstool

Penn Entertainment – the business formerly known as Penn National Gaming – has exercised its option to acquire all remaining shares of media brand Barstool Sports.

Penn acquired a 36% stake in Barstool for $161.2m in 2020, after which it rebranded its sportsbook product to bear the Barstool brand name.

The operator would then increase its stake in Barstool beyond 50% – paying $62.0m for a further 14% stake – within three years. Penn was also granted immediately exercisable call rights that would allow it to acquire the remainder of the media business, “based on a fair market value calculation”.

In February of this year, Penn then revealed that it planned to exercise these options and control the entire Barstool business by early 2023.

Why MaximBet is more than a sum of its parts

When PASPA was repealed, Daniel Graetzer saw the biggest opportunity of his career. Having gone all-in on the market, he is now running a nationally recognised brand in MaximBet.
