Operators challenge German sports betting proximity ban

The constitutional court in the German state of Baden-Württemberg will hear a case from four operators challenging a ban on operating sports betting facilities in the same building as casinos and gaming halls.

Section 21 (2) of Germany’s First State Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV) prohibits sports betting and casino activities from taking place in the same building.

Germany’s Fourth State Treaty on Gambling came into force in July 2021.

The complaint states that administrative courts did not provide adequate protection for operators that had sports betting facilities in the same building as casino activities, when the GlüStV and, subsequently, section 21 (2) was enacted.

The complaint also cites a lack of temporary protection.

Section 42 (1) of the LGüG – Baden-Württemberg’s state-level gambling act, which was brought in in 2012 – states that gambling facilities must be at least 500 meters apart, measured from entrance door to entrance door.

The complaint will be discussed on 21 Nove..

Brazilian operators risk being punished for government inaction

iGB op-ed: Daniel O’Boyle argues that Brazil’s latest crackdown on sponsorship punishes operators that believed they had a clear pathway to launching before the winter.

Five matches into the season, the Premier League – and European club football in general – is well and truly back.

But the big moment of anticipation in the football world this year is still to come, when those domestic leagues will, of course, stop this winter, for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

However excited those in Europe may be, surely no nation can match Brazil in its enthusiasm for the World Cup.

So naturally, the event has long been the circled date on the calendar for the launch of regulated sports betting in Brazil.

Operators had surely hoped that the months in the build-up to the event would be a time to prepare to get their licensed operations up and running, putting the finishing touches in place to take bets on the World Cup.

But instead, it might be close to the exact opposite.

With the opening match n..

New Hampshire sports betting handle falls to 11-month low in July

Consumers in New Hampshire wagered $42.7m (£36.3m/€43.0m) on sports in July, the lowest monthly figure since August of last year.

July’s handle was 16.4% higher than $36.7m in July 2021 but 20.3% behind the $53.6m bet by players in June this year, according to figures published by the New Hampshire Lottery.

Of this total, $33.1m was wagered online with DraftKings, while the remaining $9.5m was spent at retail sportsbooks across the US state. DraftKings secured exclusive rights to offer sports betting online via the New Hampshire Lottery in November 2019.

In terms of revenue, gross gaming revenue from sports betting in July amounted to $4.5m, which was 45.2% ahead of $3.1m in the same month last year and only 6.3% lower than $4.8m in June 2021, despite the difference in handle.

Some $3.7m of gross gaming revenue was generated online, while $768,211 came from retail sports betting facilities.

The New Hampshire Lottery also reported that the state was able to generate $2.1m in tax fr..

SuperBook to launch retail sportsbook at Orioles stadium

Sports betting operator SuperBook Sports has announced a new partnership with MLB team the Baltimore Orioles that will involve the building of a retail sportsbook sports lounge at the club’s Oriole Park at Camden Yards ballpark.

Active in Nevada since 1986, SuperBook’s online brand has expanded as sports betting has grown to other states. In June, the operator expanded into Tennessee through a platform partnership with International Game Technology (IGT).

TJ Brightman, Orioles chief revenue officer lauded the deal in a statement: “The Orioles are thrilled to partner with SuperBook to enhance our gameday experience with the introduction of their first-ever on-premise sports lounge,” he said.

How social gaming set Bryan Bennett up to succeed at Betfred

Bryan Bennett fought “800lb gorillas” working for a challenger brand in the social casino space, and that experience could prove crucial as he works to make Betfred USA Sports a key player in the sports betting sector.

The social casino boom of the early 2010s, sparked by what was then Caesars Interactive’s investment in Playtika in 2009, opened up a new audience to the gaming industry and sparked a wave of M&A. The likes of DoubleDown, Big Fish Games, Product Madness and Buffalo Studios were among those to sell at significant multiples.

The smaller challengers tended to have to fight for market share, which in turn saw the market leaders turn to them as acquisition targets to further shore up their strong positions.

Bryan Bennett entered the fray as vice president of marketing for slot developer Rocketplay, one of these challengers, and one that was ultimately snapped up by slot manufacturer AGS. This saw Bennett, who previously worked for strategy games developer Kabam and casua..

A lucky escape for Entain?

iGB op-ed: this week, the gambling industry was the subject of front-page news when gaming giant Entain paid a record settlement of £17m (€20.1m/$20.4m) to the GB Gambling Commission for a range of regulatory failings. Marese O’Hagan ponders whether another operator would have had its licence revoked outright.

News of the scale of Entain’s £17m regulatory settlement this week generally ignites sharp debate between anti-industry campaigners and those in support of the sector. And with social media playing such a large part in communication today, it is easier than ever to absorb both sides of the debate.

However, there was little sympathy for Entain on Wednesday morning when the penalty was announced.

In total, Entain has agreed to pay £14m for social responsibility and anti-money laundering (AML) failures carried out by its online gaming business LC International Limited – which operates 13 UK sites, including Coral.co.uk, Ladbrokes.com and FoxyBingo.com – and a further £3m for simi..

Kansas to launch legal sports betting on 1 September

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has announced that licensed operators in the US state can begin to accept wagers on 1 September.

The four state-owned land-based casinos – Boot Hill Casino & Resort, Kansas Star Casino, Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway, and Kansas Crossing Casino & Hotel – will be able to accept bets in-person and on mobile platforms.

Tribal casinos are also working to align on compacts with the state for sports wagering, with these casinos to be authorised to launch as soon as agreements are reached.

“Legalising sports betting is a common-sense solution that keeps Kansans’ money in Kansas and drives business to sporting events, casinos, restaurants, and other entertainment venues,” Kelly said. “I want to thank all our partners for working with us to get this done in time for football season.”

Kansas Lottery executive director Stephen Durrell added: “This announcement represents a lot of hard work and collaboration between the Kansas Lottery, the Kansas Racing and Gam..
