FanDuel and DraftKings neck-and-neck in New York during July

Rival operators FanDuel and DraftKings posted almost identical online sports betting revenue in New York during July, while the state reported its lowest monthly handle in 11 months.

Players spent $962.1m (£758.6m/€875.7m) betting on sports online in July. This was the first time New York’s monthly handle has fallen below $1.00bn since August last year.

The total was 20.1% ahead of $800.8m in July last year but 17.5% behind June’s $1.17bn handle.

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) from online betting during the month reached $105.1m. This was up 43.4% from $73.3m last year and 1.3% ahead of $103.8m in June.

FanDuel versus DraftKings – the battle for New York crown

In revenue terms, there was very little between FanDuel and DraftKings. FanDuel has been the frontrunner in New York for some time but DraftKings has steadily closed the gap over recent months.

Flutter Entertainment-owned FanDuel remained marginally ahead with $40.9m in revenue for July. The operator also took $384.6m in online..

DraftKings further increases full-year guidance after Q2 growth

DraftKings has increased its full-year revenue and earnings guidance after reporting growth during both its second quarter and first half.

The operator put Q2 success down to continued customer retention and engagement, as well as the acquisition of new players. DraftKings also highlighted an expanded parlay offering and improved promotional intensity.

This led to a year-on-year rise in revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). DraftKings was also able to reduce net loss.

Based on these figures, the operator was confident in increasing FY guidance for the third consecutive quarter. DraftKings already raised FY expectations in both the first quarter of 2023 and final quarter of last year.

DraftKings also took into account anticipated launches in new markets when increasing its FY guidance. The operator expects to go live in Kentucky in September and Puerto Rico before the end of the year, with these launches set to further improve f..

DraftKings enters race to acquire PointsBet US

DraftKings is looking to outbid Fanatics for PointsBet US, prompting a strong reaction from the ecommerce giant's CEO Michael Rubin.

Tabled today (16 June) – weeks after Fanatics announced plans to acquire the business – the unsolicited non-binding indicative proposal is worth $195.0m (£152.2m/€178.5m). It states DraftKings would purchase the business on a debt-free, cash-free basis with no financing conditions.

PointsBet said its board will now assess the proposal. The group added that the proposal does not constitute a binding offer or commitment from DraftKings to place a firm bid.

The group did not set a date as to when a decision would be reached.

Fanatics’ Rubin: “They are trying to block us”

Responding to news of the DraftKings proposal, Fanatics CEO Rubin said he was “skeptical” of the move. He added that it was a “desperate” attempt to slow progress on Fanatics’ own deal with PointsBet.

“We are skeptical of the DraftKings proposal, which seems like a desperate move ..

Sports betting apps: Why change is long overdue

Over the last several years, online sports betting has continued to grow in popularity. Russell Karp, senior vice-president at DataArt, explores what sportsbooks need to do to stay at the top of their game.

Following a wave of deregulation in the US, which has led to the legalisation of sports betting in more than 30 states, millions of users are increasingly able to place bets on sports through operator websites and mobile apps.

Major operators like FanDuel and DraftKings have claimed a significant share of the US sports betting market. But I would argue that the entire industry is overlooking some critical technological developments that could change the playing field for everyone.

Studying the playbook of extremely successful apps like Spotify, Facebook, Twitter and Amazon, no sports betting app – including those offered by DraftKings and FanDuel – has effectively utilised tools like in-app personalisation, performance analytics, AI, high-quality video streaming or a loyal commun..

MA regulator “frustrated” by DraftKings betting violations

Commissioners from state gambling regulator, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), said they were “frustrated” by DraftKings' betting violations.

DraftKings reported itself to the Commission after discovering it had offered bets on the tennis UTR pro-series, which is not an approved betting event in the state.

The MGC’s Investigations and Enforcement Bureau (IEB) looked into the case. The wagering took place over a 12-day period from 10 March to 22 March.

During this time, players placed 864 bets on three events for a total handle of $7,867. DraftKings said the reason the error took place was because of a “miscommunication” between its trading and trading compliance teams.

The fault occurred after the operator copied a list of tennis offerings from a different jurisdiction without verifying if the event was approved in Massachusetts.

After discovering the issue, the DraftKings returned stakes to the players who had placed a bet, as well as removed any winnings and return..

Massachusetts’ mobile sports betting market goes live

The six online operators approved to launch mobile sports betting offerings in Massachusetts – FanDuel, DraftKings, WynnBet, Barstool, BetMGM and Caesars – have gone live in Massachusetts.

More than six months on from when then-governor Charlie Baker signed House Bill 5164 into law, players have begun placing bets from the six online operators licensed by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) – joining the now majority of US states that have legalised the activity.

The rollout follows the launch of retail sports betting towards the end of January, that permitted any land-based casino or racetrack operator to apply for a licence.

“The debut of sports betting in Massachusetts has delivered an incredible amount of excitement and activity to our retail sportsbook at MGM Springfield,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. “We’re proud to expand our best-in-class wagering experience statewide during one of sports’ biggest months of action.”

DraftKings raises revenue guidance after successful Q4

DraftKings has raised its 2023 revenue guidance to $2.95bn (£2.47bn/€2.77bn), up from $2.90bn, after experiencing “better than expected” sportsbook results – among other successes – in the fourth quarter of 2022.

DraftKings CEO and co-founder Jason Robins pointed to a double effort of increased revenue and reduced costs as reasons for the Q4 growth, along with the sportsbook results.

Revenue for the quarter was $855m in total, a rise of 81% year-on-year.

How much do sportsbooks spend on marketing and will it lead them to profit?

Russell Karp of DataArt explores how leading US sportsbooks spend their marketing dollars, examines their strategy and results and looks for a path to profitability.

Fall and winter are intensely hot seasons for sports betting with NFL, NBA, college football and basketball, NHL and MLB post-season action. So it’s no surprise that the last three months of the year became the most expensive in terms of advertising.

BIA Advisory Services forecasted that up to $1.8bn would be spent in 2022 to promote gambling products online, with a sizeable chunk going towards sports betting. In the first week of the year alone, ad spending by the four biggest sportsbooks rocketed to a lofty $24m.

But how do these heavy marketing investments impact the sports betting business? And are sportsbooks getting a return on their investment?

Where does the money go?

To acquire as many users as possible, as early as possible, sportsbooks invest heavily in marketing. A larger share of voice, paired with attra..

CDI to develop DraftKings horse racing offering

Race track and gaming business Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has entered into a multi-year agreement with DraftKings to develop DK Horse, a pari-mutuel wagering horse racing product for the sports betting operator.

CDI’s B2B horse racing subsidiary TwinSpires will develop the white-label solution. This will involve providing the company’s advanced deposit wagering technology to DraftKings.

While TwinSpires initially started life as CDI’s B2C online betting and casino platform, the business pivoted to being a B2B provider after facing intense market competition in 2021.

Under the terms of the deal, CDI will also provide the pari-mutuel wagering rights to content that the business owns or controls, such as the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. CDI will also provide additional horse racing content on the operator’s behalf.

“We are excited to collaborate with Churchill Downs Incorporated, not only to give our existing customers an opportunity to engage with pari-mutuel horse wa..
