DC sports betting revenue up in February despite handle decline

Sports wagering revenue in Washington DC increased year-on-year during February despite a fall in player spending.

Gross gaming revenue for the month reached $1.2m, which was 62.0% ahead of $740,552 in the same month last year but 20.0% lower than $1.5m in January 2023.

DC’s sports betting handle in February amounted to $12.6m, down 34.0% from $19.1m in February 2022 and also 21.9% behind $18.5m in January of this year.

Gambet, operated by the DC Lottery and powered by Intralot, remained the frontrunner in the market with $626,273 in revenue from $5.7m in total wagers for the month.

Colorado sports betting handle hits $425.1m in February

Players in Colorado spent a total of $425.1m betting on sports during February, a decline on the same month in the previous year and also down from January this year.

Betting handle for the month was 3.5% below the $440.5m wagered during February of last year and 22.3% lower than $547.2m in January 2023.

Of this total, $421.6m was wagered on sports online, with the remaining $3.5m attributed to betting at retail sportsbooks across Colorado.

Rhode Island sports betting revenue level in February

Revenue from sports betting in Rhode Island remained level year-on-year in February, while the state reported only a marginal increase in handle.

Wagering revenue for the month amounted to $3.6m, equalling the amount generated in the same month last year, but down 30.8% from $5.2m in January of this year.

Online betting accounted for $2.0m of revenue in February, while combined retail revenue from Twin River and Tiverton Casino reached $1.6m. Twin River retail revenue hit $1.9m, while Tiverton Casino posted $420,795 for the month.

RSI and Connecticut Lottery to wind down sports betting partnership

Rush Street Interactive (RSI) and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation (CLC) have announced a joint plan to wind down their online and in-person sports betting partnership in the state.

Under the arrangement, RSI will continue to operate sports betting in Connecticut on behalf of the CLC until a replacement is selected, with the CLC to issue a request for proposals in the coming days.

Wagers placed on PlaySugarHouse.com or at any of the nine Connecticut retail locations will remain valid and all wins will continue to be paid out appropriately, with RSI saying it will work with the CLC to minimise any disruptions to players or business partners.

NH sports betting market grows year-on-year in February

Sports wagering handle and revenue in New Hampshire both increased year-on-year in February, although the state also reported month-on-month declines.

Player spending for the month amounted to $87.0m, which was 22.7% more than $70.9m in February 2022 but 10.5% lower than $97.2m in January this year.

Of this total, $75.5m was wagered online, while the remaining $11.5m was spent betting at retail sportsbooks.

Tab NZ pens long-term strategic partnering with Entain

Tab NZ, the sole holder of a betting licence in New Zealand, has entered into a long-term strategic partnership with Entain.

Under the arrangement, which remains subject to ministerial approval, Entain will support Tab NZ with delivering wagering and broadcast functions in the country for a period of 25 years.

Tab NZ said it took the decision to enter such a partnership due to increasing competition, rising costs, capital constraints and other challenges that have impacted its ability to deliver adequate funding to racing and sports.

With these challenges expected to increase, Tab NZ said it had spent the last six months engaging with a range of operators in relation to a strategic partnering arrangement and received a number of proposals, including the successful pitch from Entain.

Mississippi sports betting handle continues to decline in February

Sports wagering handle in Mississippi fell again in February, with the US state reporting a month-on-month and year-on-year decline.

Consumers spent $39.8m betting on sports during the month, down 2.7% from $40.9m in the same month last year and also 30.4% lower than the amount wagered in January this year.

In terms of revenue, this reached $3.1m, which was 63.1% higher than $1.9m in February of 2022 but 39.2% behind the $5.1m generated in January.

Massachusetts sports betting revenue reaches $2.0m in opening month

Sports betting revenue in Massachusetts amounted to $2.0m during the first full month of regulation in February.

The US state opened its legal sports betting market on 31 January with an initial three land-based operators going live: Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield and Plainridge Park Casino.

Plainridge Park proved the most successful of the three operators with $890,555 in revenue for the opening month, just ahead or Encore Boston Harbor on $857,602. MGM Springfield generated $262,066 in sports betting revenue.

Louisiana online sports betting handle slips to seven-month low in February

Consumers in Louisiana spent $175.7m betting on sports online during February, the lowest monthly total since August 2022 and a year-on-year drop of 16.7%.

The total was down from $211.0m in February last year, the first full month of legal online sports betting in the US state, and also 28.3% lower than the record $245.2m wagered in January of this year.

However, revenue from online wagering reached $17.8m, up 6.7% from $16.7m in the same month last year, but 19.1% behind $22.0m in January 2023.

NJ gambling revenue up 10.4% year-on-year in February

Gambling revenue in New Jersey climbed 10.4% year-on-year during the month of February, with growth in almost all market sectors.

Revenue for the month amounted to $412.2m, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. This was up from $373.3m in the same month in 2022 but 5.7% behind the $436.9m generated in January of this year.

Physical slot machines remained the core source of revenue in the state, with the $159.3m collected in February being 3.5% ahead of the previous year.

However, land-based table games revenue slipped 4.9% to $55.6m, although this was the only segment to experience a decline.

Playtech extends partnership with Betfred

Betfred and Playtech have expanded their partnership in a multi-year extension deal that sees Playtech products in Betfred shops.

The two businesses have a 12-year history of working together.

Included in the extension is an increase in the amount of Playtech Self Service Betting Terminals (SSBTs) in Betfred shops. Playtech reports that terminal numbers have grown by 50% in the previous two years and installing more will help meet customer demand for sports betting SSBTs.

Additionally, the terminals will also feature horse and dog racing for the first time.

Arizona sports wagering handle reaches $572.5m in December

Consumers in Arizona spent $572.5m betting on sports in December of 2022, a year-on-year increase of 14.7%.

The monthly figure was comfortably higher than the $499.2m bet during the same month in 2021, but 7.2% behind the $616.9m wagered in November 2022.

Mobile betting accounted for $566.5m of all bets placed in December, while a further $5.0m was spent at retail sportsbooks in the state.
