Kentucky to launch legal sports betting on 7 September

Kentucky will launch legal retail sports betting on 7 September, with online wagering to follow on 28 September.

The schedule was agreed yesterday (10 July) by the state’s governor, Andy Beshear, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) and state lawmakers. This means Kentuckians can begin placing legal sports bets in less than 60 days.

This followed a KHRC meeting where members unanimously approved emergency administrative regulations to govern sports betting. Governor Beshear immediately signed off on these at Red Mile, a gaming and racing venue eligible to apply to be a sports betting location.

The 7 September launch date for retail comes just days before the start of both the 2023 NFL and collegiate football seasons.

Maverick Gaming appeals tribal sports betting lawsuit dismissal

Cardroom operator Maverick Gaming has filed an opening brief in the United States Court of Appeals, as part of an ongoing challenge into what it views as a tribal sports betting monopoly in the state of Washington.

It was filed for the Ninth Circuit.

In January 2022, Maverick Gaming filed a lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

Genius Sports scores extended data deal with NFL

Genius Sports has signed a multi-year extension to its strategic partnership with the National Football League (NFL).

The deal runs to the end of the 2027-28 season, with Genius to retain exclusivity over official NFL data and video distribution.

This includes play-by-play statistics, proprietary Next Gen Stats (NGS) data and official sports betting data. Genius will continue to distribute this to media companies and sports betting operators around the world.

Genius began working with the NFL in 2021 and now powers over 98% of the legal US sports betting market with official NFL data.

The deal also covers exclusive rights to distribute NFL Watch & Bet low latency live game video feeds to sportsbooks internationally. From the 2023-24 season, Genius and the NFL have reached a multi-year agreement to distribute Watch & Bet in the US and Canada.

Sportradar wins bid for CONMEBOL data rights

Sports data analytics and technology business Sportradar has announced that the continental governing body of South American football, CONMEBOL, has chosen the business as its new betting data rights partner.

The outcome of the competitive bidding process will see Sportradar become CONMEBOL’s exclusive audio visual and betting data rights partner.

The multi-year deal covers the worldwide rights for three CONMEBOL football competitions – the Copa Libertadores, the Recopa Sudamericana and the Copa Sudamericana. Under the terms of the agreement, the rights will run for the next four seasons.

Sportradar and CONMEBOL strengthen relationship

CONMEBOL’s secretary-general, José Astigarraga, said the organisation was “glad” to strengthen its relationship with Sportradar.

“We are sure that the prestigious CONMEBOL club tournaments, with more than 60 years of history, will be a great showcase to be able to get closer to the true fans of South American football,” he added.

Arizona handle slips 16.9% month-on-month on April

Sports betting handle in Arizona fell month-on-month during April, although the $535.7m wagered by players was up year-on-year.

The monthly handle was 4.5% ahead of $512.9m in April 2022 but 16.9% less than $644.8m in March of this year.

Of this total, $531.2m was spent betting on sports online, while just $3.7m was wagered at retail sportsbooks across the state.

Consumers won $486.5m from betting, leaving $48.0m in adjusted gross event wagering revenue before free bets. This was 64.4% ahead of $29.2m last year but 10.1% behind $53.4m in March this year.

RI sports betting handle slips to 10-month low in May

Consumer spending on sports wagering in Rhode Island fell to its lowest total in 10 months during May.

Players bet $30.8m on sports, down 25.1% from $41.1m in May 2022 and 17.9% less than $37.5m in April this year. This was also the lowest amount since $27.7m was bet during August last year.

Some $22.4m was wagered online, while $8.4m was spent betting at retail sportsbooks. The latter was split $4.8m at Twin River and $3.5m at the Tiverton Casino.

Revenue for the month amounted to $3.9m, up 69.6% from $2.3m last year and 30.0% more than $3.0m in April 2023.

Michigan online gambling revenue hits $185.8m in May

Online gambling gross receipts in Michigan reached $185.8m in May, an improvement on last year but the second consecutive month of decline.

The combined total from igaming and sports betting across commercial and tribal operators was 15.5% ahead of $160.9m in May 2022. However, this was 5.1% less than the $195.7m generated in April of this year.

Online casino gaming gross receipts amounted to $150.6m, up by 18.2% year-on-year, while gross sports betting receipts climbed 5.1% to $35.2m.

It was also reported that total sports betting handle for the month amounted to $288.3m, a 15.0% drop on last year and a 10.7% decline from April.

NH reports further handle decline in May

Sports wagering revenue in New Hampshire increased both month-on-month and year-on-year in May despite another drop in handle.

Player spending for the month amounted to $52.1m, a 31.6% decline from $76.2m in the same month last year and also 20.0% lower than $65.1m in April this year.

Of this total, $46.4m was spent betting on sports online, while the remaining $5.7m was wagered at retail sportsbooks in the state.

However, despite a decline in handle, gross gaming revenue from sports betting during the month increased.

PA gambling revenue continues to rise in May

Gambling revenue in Pennsylvania increased both month-on-month and year-on-year in May to reach a total of $479.4m.

Revenue was 7.1% ahead of $447.8m in May of 2022 and also 0.6% higher than $476.7m in April this year.

Land-based slots remained the primary source of revenue by some distance, generating a total of $210.9m during the month. This was 2.5% more than in the same month last year.

In contrast, retail games revenue declined 7.8% year-on-year to $81.6m.

NJ gambling revenue continues to rise in May despite land-based declines

Gambling revenue in New Jersey increased month-on-month and year-on-year during May despite the state’s land-based market experiencing further declines.

Total revenue for the month amounted to $470.9m, which was 9.4% ahead of $430.6m in May 2022 and 1.8% higher than $462.7m in April of this year.

Land-based gambling remained the primary source of revenue at $227.3m, but this was down 2.4% from $227.3m last year.

Within the retail sector, slots revenue slipped 0.8% to $172.9m, while table games revenue also fell 7.3% to $54.4m.

In terms of internet gambling, revenue increased by 18.7% year-on-year to $161.4m. Online slots revenue jumped 19.0% to $159.1m, while peer-to-peer poker also edged up 1.7% to $2.4m.

Arizona sports betting revenue up despite handle fall in March

Consumer spending on sports betting in Arizona fell 6.7% year-on-year in March, although the state was able to report a rise in revenue.

Wagering handle for the month was $644.8m, down from $691.0m in March 2022 but 5.8% higher than $609.3m in February of this year.

Players bet $639.9m online and $4.1m at retail sportsbooks across the state.

Bettors won a total of $591.2m during March, while adjusted gross event wagering revenue before free bets was $53.4m. This was 43.6% ahead of $37.2m last year and also 57.1% more than $34.0m in February this year.

Of total revenue, $53.0m was attributed to online wagering, while the remaining $318,760 came from retail betting.

Iowa sports betting revenue up despite further handle decline in May

Sports betting revenue in Iowa increased year-on-year and month-on-month in May despite the state experiencing an ongoing drop in handle.

Consumer spending for the month amounted to $147.7m, marginally down from $147.9m in May 2022 and also 14.6% behind $172.9m in April this year.

This marked the second consecutive month of handle decline in the state.

Of the total amount wagered by players, $135.2m was bet online and $12.5m at retail sports betting facilities.
