Gambling revenue in New Jersey increased by 7.5% year-on-year, to $521.5m in September, despite a fall in land-based casino revenue.

Total revenue was comfortably higher than $485.0m in September 2022. However, the figure was slightly lower than the $531.6m generated in New Jersey in August this year.

Land-based casino gambling remains the main source of revenue in New Jersey despite the yearly decline. Revenue for this segment hit $246.5m, down 2.1% from $251.7m last year.

Some $182.7m of all land-based gambling revenue came from slot machine games, a drop of 2.0%. Table games generated 63.8%, down 2.2% from September last year.

Igaming revenue tops $164m in September

Turning to igaming, this area of the market experienced the most growth in September. For the month, revenue amounted to $163.8m, an increase of 21.1% from last year’s $135.2m.

Online slots drew $161.4m in revenue, up 21.4% from the previous year. The other $2.4m was generated from peer-to-peer poker games in New Jersey.

Resorts Digital remains the front-runner in this market, but only by a small margin. The operator posted $45.4m in igaming revenue, just ahead of Golden Nugget on $45.1m. Borgata was also not far behind with $41.6m in igaming revenue in September.

New Jersey sports betting revenue up 13.4%

As for sports betting, revenue increased 13.4% from $98.0m in September 2022 to $111.1m this year. Betting handle was also 28.6% higher year-on-year at $1.30bn, up from $1.01bn. This included $1.26bn in online bets and $43.5m worth of retail wagers.

DraftKings, and partner Resorts World, retained top spot in the sports betting market. The partnership overtook Meadowlands in August, marking the first time the latter did not lead the market since January 2019. Revenue from DraftKings and Resorts World reached $49.9m in September.

As for other operators, Meadowlands and partners FanDuel, PointsBet and SuperBook sat second with $34.1m in revenue. Borgata and BetMGM followed in third with $11.5m in sports betting revenue.

Year-to-date revenue surpassed $4.00bn

Looking at year-to-date performance, revenue hit $4.3m for the nine months through to the end of September. This was 10.9% more than at the same point in 2022.

Land-based casino revenue was 1.8% higher at $2.17bn. Slots revenue jumped by 2.9% to $1.61bn but table games revenue slipped 1.4% to $559.9m.

Igaming revenue climbed 15.4% to $1.41bn, with slots revenue rising 15.5% to $1.38bn and poker revenue 6.5% to $22.2m. Meanwhile, sports betting revenue hiked 37.2% to $709.0m, with a total handle of $7.77bn.
