IBIA report highlights role restrictions play in supporting unregulated market

A new report from the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has highlighted the effect overly-restrictive regulation has on driving players offshore.

The IBIA study, The Availability of Sports Betting Products: An Economic and Integrity Analysis, was prepared by H2 Gambling Capital and developed in partnership with betting assoications in Brazil, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. It used data from 12 markets where sports betting is regulated.

The research analysed the effects that restrictive and liberal regulated regimes have on player habits. These centred around consumer protection, regulatory oversight, sports integrity and taxation.

The report found a strong correlation between the availability of sports betting products and the proportion of consumers wagering with onshore regulated operators. In markets where players faced few restrictions, the channelisation towards the legal market stood at 90% or more.

IBIA pens sports betting integrity partnership with IXUP

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has entered into a sports betting integrity partnership with data security and analysis business IXUP.

Under the deal, IBIA and IXUP will explore integrity-compliance products and services for the US market. This includes developing solutions to support operators, regulators and sports governing bodies.

IBIA will promote IXUP’s PlayPause encryption matching network to US member operators. PlayPause is a pilot scheme aggregating state voluntary exclusion lists and sports involuntary exclusion lists into a single real-time API.

In return, IXUP will promote IBIA’s integrity monitoring solution through its relationships with existing US clients. These include sports betting operators, regulators, sports leagues and teams.

Both parties may explore complementary services for other entities in the sports wagering ecosystem. These include sports governing bodies and teams.

IBIA expands Brazilian network with KTO

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has named KTO, the sports betting brand owned by the KTO Group, as its latest member.

Founded in 2018, KTO currently operates in both Brazil and Peru, with plans to also launch in Chile.

As part of new regulatory measures in Brazil, KTO is required to join an international body for monitoring sports integrity. Its membership of IBIA satisfies this demand and puts the brand in line with new Brazilian betting laws.

KTO joins nearly 50 businesses and over 125 sports betting brands in the IBIA network.

Women’s sports boom raises corruption risk, new report warns

Increased and more widespread monitoring of women’s sport should be considered to help combat match-fixing, according to a new report.

‘Breaking Barriers: Assessing Women’s Sports, Betting, and Integrity Challenges’ looked at the current state of female sports around the world.

Presented this week at iGB L!VE, the study had the support of leading industry organisations, operators and suppliers. These included the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA), All-In Diversity Project (AIDP), Entain, Flutter and Stats Perform.

The report flagged a “dramatic” rise in women’s sport worldwide, accompanied by a similar increase in betting.

Football led the way in terms of betting activity, with an annual market growth rate of approximately 20% since 2020. This was followed by tennis, basketball and cricket, with growth rates of over 10% during the period from 2017 to 2022.

IBIA expands membership network with OlyBet

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has revealed OlyBet, the sports betting brand of Olympic Entertainment Group (OEG), as its latest member.

OlyBet will feed into IBIA’s betting integrity monitoring and alert network, working alongside licensed operators from around the world.

Active across the Baltic region, OlyBet joins almost 50 businesses and more than 120 sports betting brands in the IBIA network.

IBIA signs betting integrity deal with Portuguese regulator

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and the Portuguese Online Betting and Gambling Association (APAJO) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Under the agreement, the IBIA and APAJO will work together on issues related to betting and sports integrity, as well as a safe and sustainable online sports betting environment.

The two associations will discuss areas of cooperation and potential shared projects, with the aim of pooling their expertise on a range of activities.

“APAJO is strongly invested in building and maintaining the most beneficial environment for Portuguese consumers and operators and sports integrity is definitively a very important part of this overarching goal,” APAJO executive committee president Ricardo Domingues said.

IBIA received 40 suspicious alerts in Q1 2023

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) received 40 suspicious betting alerts across nine sports in the first quarter of 2023.

This was down by 16.6% compared to the alerts IBIA recorded in Q1 2022 and 20% from the previous quarter.

Sport-by-sport, football generated the highest number of alerts at 15, representing 37.5% of the total. Tennis was close behind with 12, representing 30% of the total. Combined, football and tennis made up 67.5% of the alerts in the first quarter.

Table tennis accounted for four of the alerts. Basketball and esports generated two alerts each, while volleyball, boxing and snooker each accounted for one alert.

By continent

A total of 24 alerts took place in Europe. Six took place in Asia, while four took place in Africa. North America and South America accounted for two alerts each.

Two esports alerts were not included in this breakdown as IBIA said it was unclear where the alerts took place.

IBIA reports 268 suspicious betting alerts in 2022

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) announced that it reported 268 suspicious sports betting alerts in 2022 – a 14% year-on-year increase.

This compares with an average of 230 alerts announced between 2019 and 2021.

The association stated this increase can be largely put down to a widening of its monitoring network due to membership growth.

During the year, the IBIA added 16 new members to its ranks, meaning that 45 businesses representing 125 betting brands now count themselves as members.

“The addition of 16 new members in 2022 has undoubtedly strengthened our monitoring and alert network and our ambition is to see all responsible regulated sports betting operators collaborating through IBIA,” said Khalid Ali, CEO of the IBIA. “Proactive and collaborative action by our sector is an essential component in the fight against match-fixing, and to enhancing the overall reputation of the sector in general.”

IBIA signs up Bet99 as latest member

Canadian online sports betting and casino platform Bet99 has become the latest gambling business to join the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA).

Bet99 will now feed into the IBIA’s global betting integrity monitoring and alert network, working alongside a host of licensed operators from around the world.

Ontario approval

The announcement comes shortly after Bet99 secured approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario to offer online gambling services in the Canadian province.

Membership of an integrity body such as IBIA is a requirement for Ontario licence-holders.

Key industry players partner for women’s sports research

A group of leading industry groups and businesses have joined forces to carry out long-term research exploring the growth in women’s sports.

Entain, Stats Perform, the International Betting Integrity Association and the All-In Diversity Project will work in collaboration with the German Sports University of Cologne to conduct the research.

The initiative will focus on the links between the popularity of women’s sports, betting on women’s sports and rising numbers of female sports bettors.

The group will work to publish its findings ahead of football’s Fifa Women’s World Cup 2023, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand.

Confirmation of the new research project comes as the 2022 Uefa European Women’s Football Championship is taking place in England.

The tournament is currently at the quarter-final stage, with England, Spain, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, France and the Netherlands having progressed from the group stage.

IBIA reports 88 suspicious betting alerts in Q2

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 88 suspicious betting alerts in the second quarter, with football the sport of most concern.

Football was responsible for 32 alerts during Q2, ahead of tennis with 27, horse racing on 12 and eight for table tennis. A further four alerts were related to esports, three for basketball and one each for handball and greyhound racing.

The total number of suspicious betting alerts was up significantly from 38 in Q2 of last year.

In terms of location, events in Europe generated the highest number of alerts with a total of 46, with 18 of these for football and 12 for tennis.

The highest number of alerts were registered in Poland, with six alerts being reported in the quarter, all of which were related to table tennis. Denmark placed second with five alerts, all for tennis.

Elsewhere, 18 alerts were raised in Asia, all of which were related to suspicious betting on football. Mongolia topped the list here with four alerts, ahead..
