How crypto could be embedded in online betting

Tom Waterhouse of WaterhouseVC revisits the subject of crypto wagering, and whether it could be central to next-gen sportsbook platforms.

In May, we discussed the significant opportunity in crypto betting, which is growing gross gaming revenue (GGR) at 36.6% per annum.

Online crypto operators have a similar user experience to online fiat operators. The likes of Stake.com and Sportsbet.io already record extraordinary turnover.

White label platform solutions for crypto betting operators are leveraged to the growth of crypto wagering as a whole. This means they are not exposed to the operational and regulatory risk of a single crypto wagering business.

Premier Greyhound Racing signs with UK’s retail betting leaders

Premier Greyhound Racing (PGR), the media rights business set up to supply greyhound racing coverage to the betting industry, has signed commercial deals with the UK’s four biggest retail betting operators.

The new partnerships will see PGR supply the retail operations of Entain’s Ladbrokes and Coral, William Hill, Paddy Power and Betfred.

The agreements will see the recently launched greyhound racing rights holder supply pictures from its British tracks to the operators’ shops from the start of 2024.

PGR, which is a joint venture between Arena Racing (ARC) and Entain, owns nine of the 20 licensed British greyhound tracks and the media rights for five independent tracks.

Mark Kingston, director of PGR, said: “As important as greyhound racing is to the betting industry as a whole, greyhounds have always been a fundamental part of the betting shop service. Michigan online gambling revenue reaches $1.98bn in 2022

Gross receipts from online sports betting and internet casino games in Michigan amounted to $1.98bn in 2022, a 41.4% year-on-year increase.

The yearly total, comprising gross receipts from both commercial and tribal operators in the state, was comfortably ahead of the $1.40bn figure posted during the first full year of legal online gambling in Michigan in 2021.

Of this total, $1.58bn came from online casino gaming, while internet sports wagering was responsible for $399.6m in gross receipts.

Caesars enters sports betting partnership with Massachussetts’ Raynham Park

Caesars Entertainment has partnered with Massachusetts’ Raynham Park to open a retail sports betting facility there, pending approvals, after the racing centre ended its ties with Bet365.

Caesars will operate a 30,000sq ft retail location at a 13-acre site, with construction set to be completed during H2 2023.

The 60,000sq ft entertainment complex at the former greyhound racecourse, located just south of Boston, will also feature two restaurants, bars and private event space.

Mississippi sports betting revenue reaches $11.3m in December

Sports betting revenue in Mississippi amounted to $11.3m in December, representing a significant month-on-month and year-on-year increase.

Revenue was 253.1% higher than $3.2m in December of 2021 and also 121.6% ahead of the $5.1m reported in November 2022.

In terms of handle, players in Mississippi spent $74.4m betting on sports during the month, up 31.0% from $56.8m in December 2021 and 1.1% higher than $74.4m in November 2022.

NH betting revenue and handle rise year-on-year in December

The New Hampshire Lottery reported a year-on-year increase in both sports wagering gross gaming revenue (GGR) and handle for December.

Players in the state spent $90.9m betting on sports in the month, up 5.2% from December of 2021 but a 2.4% drop from $93.1m in November of 2022.

Of this total, $65.9m was spent wagering on the DraftKings mobile sportsbook, while some $25.0m was bet at the operator’s three retail sportsbooks in New Hampshire.

Fanatics opens first retail sportsbook inside NFL stadium

The Fanatics Betting and Gaming arm of sports apparel giant Fanatics has become the first sports wagering operator to open a retail sportsbook inside a National Football League (NFL) stadium.

Located at FedExField in Maryland, the home of NFL team the Washington Commanders, the facility also marks Fanatics’ first venture into the sports betting market, as well as its entrance into the state of Maryland, with the Commanders as its market access partner.

The 5,000sq ft venue features eight betting windows, 21 self-service betting kiosks, two LED video walls, 38 TV monitors and a full-service restaurant. Customers will be able to place bets on a wide range of major sports events at the facility.

Genius Sports enters NFL data and betting deal with TSN+

Genius Sports has entered into a partnership with Canadian sports channel The Sports Network (TSN), wherein Genius will supply TSN’s streaming platform TSN+ with its proprietary data feed for NFL games.

Under the terms of the agreement, Genius will deliver its real-time overlays to TSN+ which will include graphics and visualisations as well as its Next Gen Stats (NGS) data.

Since April 2021, the sports data business has been the official data partner of the league – an agreement which was expanded to include streaming options for US operators in November 2022.

Ontario reinstates UFC betting

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) announced that licensed sports betting operators in the Canadian province can resume processing wagers on Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events with immediate effect.

Last month, the AGCO ordered all operators to stop taking bets on the UFC due to integrity concerns amid reports of suspicious betting patterns in other jurisdictions.

Since this announcement, the AGCO has been actively engaged with regulated entities and stakeholders as they worked to address the issues. This in turn led to the UFC updating its own policies and procedures.
